Elizabeth Henning (Betty)/b> Betty began raising dairy goats in 1979 in Springfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, and began shipping milk to the Southwest Wisconsin Dairy Goat Products Cooperative in 1986. She served as Board member and Treasurer of that group until 1991 when she moved to Arizona.
While in Iowa, she was also a member of the Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota Dairy Goat Associations. She served on the Board of the IDGA and was its newsletter editor for several years. Her sons, Gordon and Benjamin were both active in 4-H with dairy goat projects.
The Springfield Oaks Saanen herd has become nationally known as a source of quality Saanen breeding stock for both commercial and show herds. The herd has been classified/appraised every year since 1986, and has participated in DHIR testing as possible. The herd has produced many does with lactations exceeding 3000#, does and bucks scoring excellent, numerous grand champions, and national show class winners, including the 2005 Reserve National Champion Saanen and 2011 Reserve National Champion Recorded Grade.
Betty is a life member of ADGA, has been a licensed ADGA judge since 1991 and a linear appraiser since 1993. She has judged and/or appraised thousands of goats in every state but Hawaii. She has also been an active member of many ADGA committees over the past 30+ years and currently chairs the Genetic Advancement and History committees. Locally, she serves as President of the Southern Arizona Dairy Goat Association and was the local chair of the 2010 ADGA Convention in Tucson. She is serving her 6th year as a Director from ADGA’s District VI, and was re-elected in October 2015 to ADGA’s Executive Committee.
Betty spent many years working as an archaeologist and historic preservation specialist, primarily in the Midwest, and spent an amazing year participating in an archaeological research project in the Republic of the Sudan. A retired Middle School and Community College teacher, Betty continues as an ADGA senior judge and linear appraiser and enjoys showing her animals when possible. She also has been a member of and judge for USBGA and raised percentage Boers.
